Seton Interceptor Racing
Points In The Bag At Cadwell Park
Bike Interceptor Yamaha by Seton made the annual August Bank Holiday trip to the picturesque circuit of Cadwell Park, Lincolnshire, to contest round 9 of the 2011 MCE British Superbike Championship series securing more valuable points (27-29 August).
Despite crashing out of a podium position in Monday's reduced 14-lap Main Event, Sam Warren solidified his top 5 position in the Championship with a hard-fought fifth in Sunday's 12-lap Sprint.
In a weekend dominated by local rider, Ben Wilson, Bike Interceptor by Yamaha's Sam Warren continued his rich vein of qualifying form to line his Yamaha R6 up on the middle of row 2 for the Sprint event. Locking horns with Triumph riders McConnell and Iddon, Warren secured another 11 points for his Championship total, taking the chequered flag in fifth to elevate himself to fourth in the standings.
Posting the third quickest lap time of the Sprint positioned Sam on the outside of the front row for the Main Event on Bank Holiday Monday. Sam made a blistering start, maintaining his third position as he became embroiled in a 'battle of the Supermoto champions' with Christian Iddon. The constant pressure from the Triumph rider spurned Warren on to post the third fastest lap of the race (1:30.136 lap 2) as he man-handled his Yamaha up the infamous Cadwell Mountain and through the narrow woodland section to maintain his position.
Sam looked almost assured of yet more solid points and another trip to the rostrom, but a small error on lap 9 exiting Barn put Sam unexpectedly out of proceedings.
The Metzeler National Superstock 600 Australian duo of Ben Burke and Andy Lawson once again proved thier mettle on a circuit they had not previously raced at. Qualifying in 26th and 27th positions respectively, the pair made strong starts from the lights to pass a number of riders on the opening lap before a red flag incident at the Mountain brought a premature halt to the race.
The riders regrouped for a reduced 12-lap showdown, and once again both riders made strong starts from the line, picking off the riders ahead. Ben was closing in on the top ten, and Andy knocking on the door of scoring his first British championship points, as a second red flag signalled the end of the race on lap 9.
Sam Warren: "A frustrating end to the weekend. Again we had good qualifying positions and I bought it home for a safe 5th in the sprint race, despite a few riders playing it rough. Our pace in the Sprint put us 3rd on the grid for Monday's race, and running 3rd from the off I was very unhappy to make a small mistake late in the race. Onto Donington next and the aim is to get back on track with two positive results. Big thank you to all the team and sponsors for their hard work and support."
Ben Burke: "Cadwell was a fantastic experience for me, a great place to ride, I really enjoyed it. Qualifying was a challenge as I anticipated being faster after doing a track day there recently. However, I made a really good start from way back on the grid to finish 12th. It was great to have my parents over from Australia to watch. A massive thanks to all the team for their hard work this weekend and I'm looking forward to Donington Park."
Andy Lawson: "Overall I am happy with the weekend. Cadwell is a very difficult track but my lap times were getting close to the front group. I feel everytime I ride the bike I am getting closer to the sharp end. I would like to thank the team for doing a great job with the bike, and look to score my first points at Donington."
Phil Seton, Team Manager: "This has been a difficult weekend for us, with many long hours spent behind-the-scenes to ensure that our bikes were ready to race. I was very pleased with the continued progress that Andy and Ben made with each successive session, and their results once again far outweighed our expectations, especially with Ben suffering from illness this weekend. They both learnt a difficult circuit relatively quickly and their lap times were very promising.
Sam again has shown that he is a true contender, and can consistently run in the top three in both the wet and the dry. In the Sprint we went against the trend and opted for the harder rear Pirelli in the hope that it would have more life left in the closing stages. The gamble paid off and Sam posted his quickest times as he narrowly missed out on a podium in the closing laps.
Sam's fastest lap was good enough for another front row start, and he looked to be in control, showing some awesome skills as he kept the two Triumphs at bay, especially on the Mountain section. The track was a little slippery for the Main Event and unfortunately Sam succumbed to this. However, two more strong performances from Sam have proved that he deserves to be up at the sharp end of the Championship.
I am very, very sad for the loss of Ben Gautrey. Mine and the whole team's thoughts are with Ben's family, friends and his team in this time of great sadness."
Round 10 of the 2011 MCE British Superbike Championship takes place at Donington Park, Leicestershire (9-11 September).
