Warren On The Podium At Silverstone
Sam Warren experienced the highs and lows of racing as the Fuchs-Silkolene British Supersport championship headed to Silverstone for the penultimate round of the 2011 season (23-25 September).
The Derbyshire-based rider stormed to his fourth podium of the season with a hard-fought third place in the nine-lap Sprint opener on Saturday afternoon. A lap time of 2:11.352s around the 3.6-mile Arena GP circuit was good enough to place the Bike Interceptor Yamaha by Seton contender second on the grid for the 12-lap Main Event.
From the lights, Warren was pushed back to eighth as the pack jostled for position through the opening corners, closing the lap almost two seconds from the leader.
However, Sam rallied round, capitalising on fellow Yamaha rider Jack Kennedy’s misfortune to elevate himself into fifth on lap two, as he closed in on the leaders. A fantastic late braking move into Stowe on the fourth circulation, breezing past the Triumphs of Young and Iddon, elevated Sam into third.
Head down, Sam concentrated on the bright green livery of Championship leader Wilson, his pace visibly quicker than that of the Kawasaki rider. Biding his time, Sam made his pass for second into Stowe and looked assured of his second podium finish of the season.
Unfortunately disaster struck at the start of lap nine, a technical issue forcing Warren to pull out of the race. As a consolation, Sam’s lap time of 2:11.436s gave the Bike Interceptor Yamaha by Seton rider the fastest lap of the race. With a triple header set to close out the season at Brands Hatch, Sam will look to solidify his top five position and top Yamaha in the Championship. The Metzeler National Superstock 600 pairing of Ben Burke and Andy Lawson continued to impress as they added another circuit to their repertoire of learning for this season. With their parents trackside after making the long trans-world trip from Australia, both riders were out to deliver strong results and didn’t disappoint.
Qualifying on rows four and six respectively, Ben made his customary blistering start, moving from fifteenth to ninth on the first lap. Likewise, Andy passed five riders to move inside the top twenty to lock horns with experienced series regulars.
Displaying the potency of the Seton tuned engine, Ben chipped away at the gap to the leaders, hot on the heels of Deane Brown, outdragging him out of Woodcote to secure sixth by just 0.012s.
Andy Lawson continues to impress, learning new tracks each round whilst gelling with the team and his Yamaha YZF-R6. For the second race in a row, Andy battled with a group vying for the final points positions, as they leapfrogged each other during the closing laps before equalling his finish at Donington Park to take the chequered flag in 14th by a whisker from Whitaker for two more points.
Sam Warren: "Saturday was the prefect way to bounce back after a very disappointing Donington. The Bike Interceptor Yamaha by Seton was very good in the Sprint, after a slow start I was able to pass my way up to 4th. From then on we actually reduced the gap to the front group and we deserved a bit of luck to give us 3rd when Wilson went down. After a slow start in the Main Event, the bike felt superb and I had the pace on the leaders and felt at least another podium was on the cards. Unfortunately I suffered a rare technical problem with the bike that forced me out. All credit to the team, all our sponsors and everyone who picked me up after the disappointment of Donington."
Ben Burke: “Another good weekend! I really did not know how I was going to go this weekend due to Silverstone being such a long fast track with me having very limited track time. However, it all came together as I was able to post a reasonable qualifying time that did not leave me too far back on the grid. In the race I made a good start pushing through the pack. A couple mistakes early on saw me drop off the pack a little until I found my rhythm, then I felt comfortable to push. It was a good race so I was happy with another top ten finish. Thanks to the team for all their efforts over the weekend.”
Andy Lawson: “I could not thank the team enough for another great weekend. Riding a track that you have done very few laps on makes it tough to get the bike set up on very limited track time. Unfortunately I struggled to get a good lap in qualifying and placed 22nd. It made the race hard as I knew I would have good race pace. The race was fun with plenty of battles and close racing, and I’m pleased for me and the team with scoring more points.”
Phil Seton, Team Manager: “We had an incredibly positive weekend. Both Superstock riders performed admirably, continuing to score points and show their true potential. We are excited at the prospect of running them both next year.
The Supersport races were a mixed bag of emotions. Once again, Sam rode fantastically, putting us 2nd on the grid for Sunday’s race. Our elation and hard work turned to disappointment. The team gave Sam a great bike and he rode so well, we were sure that he was going to win the race. It was a great shame that we didn’t take a second podium but that’s racing and these things happen. We have so much faith in Sam, and feel that he could win the Championship next year. Taking the fastest lap in the race, proving that we can challenge for race wins and gathering more valuable data for next year leaves the whole team with a positive mood. ”
The season will come to an explosive climax when the final round takes place at Brands Hatch GP circuit over the weekend of 7-9 October.
